![]() ![]() You want to know why? Well, as I read the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo (the same person who directed the film), I discovered that there’s a lot of material, characters, and story arcs that were never explored in the movie. However, while the movie was awesome, it also left a lot to be desired. And I won’t deny that it’s also one of the most critically, financially, and commercially successful titles of all time. And still to this day, nearly 30 years since its release in theaters, it is considered by many to be one of the benchmarks of animation and cinema. With spectacular animation, an engaging (albeit confusing) storyline, and likable characters, Akira has withstood the test of time. ![]() I know just as anyone else does that Akira is a timeless classic in anime history. Now I know what you’re thinking “What are you talking about, MDT?! Akira doesn’t need a reboot! Its fine just the way it is!” Well just hear me out first before you all jump to conclusions. Here’s my “Top 15 Anime that Deserve Reboots”. But since I’ve been given several other suggestions, I was tempted to add them to this list. Now originally this was going to be a “Top 10” list. And I will outline why I listed them here and how I think modern remakes of them could work. Because in reality, there’s more to anime than what we are given here in America. But there are some series which I believe deserve an equal level of attention because some of the series I will mention here were just as important to anime’s history despite that not many people seem to remember them. I admit, it’s nice to see that series like Voltron, Mazinger Z, Gundam, Robotech, Dragon Ball, and Fist of the North Star are still going strong to this day, even decades after their inception. But reboots can work out if done right, and if they’re handled with care and diligence. The history of bad reboots on much loved franchises has left one too many of bitter aftertastes in peoples’ mouths, and bad memories to boot. However, a lot of reboots have a tendency to fail and ultimately fall on their faces. Ordinarily, reboots are re-imaginings of established franchises, be they in the form of movies, TV shows, comic books or even video games. And anything can happen even in the imagination. Because as the old saying goes anything is possible. But hey, it’s fun to daydream about what could be if people were to have an open mind about things. And chances are there are ideas for remakes of some of these series in the works already. Before I begin, I know that the ideas I have for reboots may never happen since some of the series I’ve listed here have pretty much been forgotten, and not many people seem to remember them today save for a few. ![]()
